We often hear about the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle, but the term may seem vague or unapproachable. This doesn’t have to be the case! You don’t need to be overwhelmed, as exercise isn’t difficult to incorporate into your daily routine. If you’re having trouble getting started, the following are a few great ways to begin.
Keep Things Fun
You’re more likely to create lasting habits and continue an active lifestyle if it consists of activities you enjoy. Not everyone wants structured exercise classes or to head to the gym. Search for activities that appeal to you, and you’ll be more likely to stick to your exercise plan.
Many fitness centers allow you to try a wide range of classes so you can pick one (or several) that you like. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, either. Look for community sports teams, walking trails, or swimming pools near you.
If you prefer staying at home, you can use video workout classes or even do jumping jacks or jump rope to improve your heart rate.
Make Staying Fit Social
You’re more likely to stick to an exercise routine if you make it a social event. Convince one of your friends or family members to join you and help you be accountable. They’ll help you stay motivated. You can also often find workout buddies at your gym or fitness center.
Exercise Every Day
As a general rule, you should do at least half an hour of physical activity every day. If you’re finding it difficult to get started, try breaking the time into smaller portions, such as three ten-minute intervals spread throughout the day. You could start with ten minutes of stretches and strength exercises in the morning, a ten-minute walk after lunch, and ten minutes of an activity you enjoy, such as golfing or frisbee in the evening.
Eat Right
You’re in charge of giving your body the food it needs to function correctly. If you’re exercising, it is especially important to have a balanced diet. You’ll need protein to help build muscles and carbohydrates to give you lasting energy. Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins and minerals. Don’t forget to stay hydrated, too! You won’t feel as energetic if you aren’t drinking the proper amount of water, and you don’t want to become dehydrated!
